Illness and Death in Custody

Cleveland – On April 11, 2017 at approximately 12:00 a.m., Darnell Evans, age 55, was arrested by third district police officers for outstanding misdemeanor warrants. Upon being booked into the Central Prison Unit, Evans’ medical screening form was completed indicating a significant medical history.
At approximately 9:48 a.m., April 11th, Evans was seen by the jail nurse and given his prescribed medications. Evans complained of feeling ill and at 4:51 p.m., Emergency Medical Service was contacted. Members of the Cleveland Division of Fire and EMS arrived at the jail and conveyed Evans to St. Vincent Charity Hospital where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Evans was pronounced deceased at the hospital April 12, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.
Members of the homicide unit, Integrity Control Section and the Scientific Investigation Unit responded to initiate an investigation. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death. This matter remains under investigation.
