Cleveland Architect Database

The Cleveland Architects Database is a listing of architects and master builders that have worked in Cleveland, since the 1820s and the buildings they designed here and abroad up to and including the 1970s. Sources include City of Cleveland Building Permits, professional publications including American Architect and Builder News, Inland Architect, Interstate Architect, the Ohio Architect and Builder, the Annals of Cleveland, the Plain Dealer, the Leader, the Press, Material Facts, the Bystander, and Cleveland Town Topics. Additional source material reviewed at the Cleveland Public Library Fine Arts Department, various books on Cleveland architecture, the American Institute of Architects Guide to Cleveland Architecture and a catalogue of architectural drawings maintained by the Western Reserve Historical Society were consulted. The Cleveland Necrology file maintained by the Cleveland Public Library, the United States Census, and Cleveland City Directories were reviewed in compiling accompanying biographies.

For this database, an architect is defined as anyone that identified himself or herself as an architect. Generally, these people had an office in the city or designed multiple structures here or in the immediate surrounding cities. This project began as a hobby by Robert Keiser over several years. Craig Bobby has researched many of the entries and donated photographs of those buildings. This is an ongoing project and will be updated on a regular basis. Biography

John Kalsch Jr. was born in Badenvillirs, Meurthe - et - Moselle, France and came to this country at the age of one. His father was a gardener and florist employed by Daniel Hanna. The father later moved to Ravenna and Interlaken, Massachusetts. John Kalsch grew up and received his education in Cleveland. He was listed as an architect in Cleveland City Directories from 1916 until 1932. He became a member of the firm of Kalsch & Hoefler in 1929. His technical education was received in architect's offices. He was living in Erie, PA by 1942.

Biography

George Kauffman was born in Manchester, Ohio and later moved to nearby Canton. Canton City Directories list him as a carpenter and later as an architect. He moved to Cleveland in 1897. His firm, the Kaufmann Architectural Company, was best known for ornate houses that bridged the Victorian era and Revival styles that were popular in the early 20th century. Concentrations of these houses are found in the Superior Park Subdivision, along Linwood Avenue in Cleveland, and on Cohassett Avenue in Lakewood. He worked with several developers including Clark and Benton, George Graham, and Bernard Schatzinger. Kauffman's later houses lacked the distinctiveness of his earlier homes. He died in Cleveland two weeks after an automobile accident in April 1940 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton.

Biography

Arthur Emil Keller was listed as an architect in Cleveland City Directories from 1907. He was a member of the firm of Jeffery & Keller in 1907 and a member of the firm of Keller & Richter in 1911. In 1916 he was employed as a draftsman by the Austin Company. He is listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect. He lived at 2570 Overlook Road in Cleveland Heights.

Biography

John Sherwood Kelly was initially a member of the firm of Howell & Thomas. In 1918, along with H.J. Albrecht and Karl E. Wilhelm, he formed the firm of Albrecht, Wilhelm, & Kelly. He designed several important houses in Shaker Heights and churches throughout Cleveland, its suburbs, and Akron. He later went into practice for himself. He was a member of the firm Sticke, Kelly & Stickle from 1948-1956. He was listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect. He lived at 5408 Euclid Avenue and his office was at 4216 Prospect Avenue. He was a member of St. Paul's Shrine and was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

Biography

Andrew D. Kent was a builder, later turned architect, with roots in the town of Newburgh before its annexation to Cleveland. Most of his buildings are located in the southeast side of the city. His most significant works were the Jones Road Congregational Church (1876) and the Disciples of Christ Church (1889) at 9200 Miles Avenue.

Biography

George S. King was born and educated in Cleveland public schools and attended Sayers College of Cleveland. He spent three years in New York City studying architecture after which he returned to Cleveland where he entered the office of Ora Williams in 1903. That partnership lasted one year. He specialized in apartment and terrace house design. Mr. King was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Woodmen of the World, and the United Commercial Travelers. Politically, he was a Republican, and had been a candidate for county commissioner.

Biography

Ozias Kinney was born in Vermont. In 1850 he was living in Ashland, Ohio listing his occupation as Master Builder. He lived in Cleveland for a brief time in the mid-1850's. He designed the Chamberlain Block that still stands in the Warehouse District. His other works in Cleveland are not known. He went on to Chicago afterwords. The 1863 Chicago City Directory lists him living on Michigan Avenue near 21st Street. Dankmar Adler, later of Adler and Sullivan, worked in his Chicago office.

Biography

Wilm Knox and John Elliot moved to Toronto from Chicago in 1888 with an office at 15 Victoria Street. E. Beaumont Jarvis joined the firm In Toronto where it was known as Knox, Elliot & Jarvis. The firm won the competition for the design of the Richardsonian Romanesque Confederation Life office building in 1889. They also competed for and lost the competition for the Toronto Board of Trade. Knox & Elliot moved to Cleveland in 1893. A May 22, 1902 Plain Dealer article highlighted the firm's designs for manufacturing plants. The firm is remembered for its office buildings with Sullivanesque ornamentation, including the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Rockefeller, and Standard Buildings. These buildings contrasted with the prevalent Beaux-Arts and Neo Classic-style buildings of the day.

Biography

Wilm Knox was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He studied architecture at the Free Church Seminary in Glasglow, special course in architecture in Glasglow, and Edinburgh. While in Edinburgh he worked for the firm of Moffett and Aitken. He came to North America in 1886, spending years in Toronto and Chicago before settling in Cleveland. While in Toronto, he formed a partnership with John H. Elliot. Knox handled engineering for the firm, including construction and equipment installation. He was also a talented water colorist and etcher and owned a collection of etchings by famous artists. A naturalist, he was considered an authority on fungi of the northern states. He painted a series of watercolors of mushrooms. His wife Agnes Childs Knox was a native of Painesville. He died in 1915 at the age of fifty-seven and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Painesville.

Biography

William Koehl was born in Akron, educated at parochial schools in Akron, and the University of Ottawa and St. Charles College. He received early training in architectural offices in Cleveland and Akron, working in the office of Frank Meade. He first appeared in Cleveland City Directories in 1905 when he was employed as a draftsman. In 1911 he formed a partnership with Alex Wolf that lasted about one year. That partnership was dissolved in 1913, when Koehl went to work as the Cleveland representative of Pittsburgh architect John T. Comes. He later would form various partnerships with Richard Van Rensselaer, Antonio DiNardo, and Adrian Foose. He was listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect. His office was in the Heights Rockefeller Building. Mr. Koehl is best known for his work for the Catholic diocese.

Biography

Alexander Koehler was German born and settled in Cleveland during the Civil War. He was active as an architect from 1863 until his death in 1895, forming various partnerships over the years. He was partnered with Frederick Roesling (1864-5), Joseph Blackburn (1869-1872), Samuel Lane (1872-3), and George F. Hammond. He was active during the High Victorian era, designing buildings in the Gothic and Second Empire styles. Significant structures that he designed included Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Sandusky, Immaculate Conception Church, the Central School in New Philadelphia (demolished), and the Logan County Courthouse in Bellefontaine. He lived on Commonwealth Street (now East 85th Street). He died on November 22, 1895, leaving a wife and six sons.
