Cleveland Architect Database

The Cleveland Architects Database is a listing of architects and master builders that have worked in Cleveland, since the 1820s and the buildings they designed here and abroad up to and including the 1970s. Sources include City of Cleveland Building Permits, professional publications including American Architect and Builder News, Inland Architect, Interstate Architect, the Ohio Architect and Builder, the Annals of Cleveland, the Plain Dealer, the Leader, the Press, Material Facts, the Bystander, and Cleveland Town Topics. Additional source material reviewed at the Cleveland Public Library Fine Arts Department, various books on Cleveland architecture, the American Institute of Architects Guide to Cleveland Architecture and a catalogue of architectural drawings maintained by the Western Reserve Historical Society were consulted. The Cleveland Necrology file maintained by the Cleveland Public Library, the United States Census, and Cleveland City Directories were reviewed in compiling accompanying biographies.

For this database, an architect is defined as anyone that identified himself or herself as an architect. Generally, these people had an office in the city or designed multiple structures here or in the immediate surrounding cities. This project began as a hobby by Robert Keiser over several years. Craig Bobby has researched many of the entries and donated photographs of those buildings. This is an ongoing project and will be updated on a regular basis. Biography

William W. Sabin was active as an architect in Cleveland from 1888 to 1923. In Cleveland he was the architect of several Presbyterian Churches and two precinct police stations. During World War I he served in the construction division of the War Department. He later moved to Akron, where he died at Akron City Hospital. His hobby was genealogy. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery.

Sargent & Lundy was a Chicago firm comprised of Frederick Sargent and Ayres D. Lundy. They are described as Mechanical and Electrical Engineers in the 1900 Chicago City Directory. Their addition to the Cleveland Railway Company Powerhouse (Woodland Avenue and West Side Street Railway) is their only known Cleveland building.

Saving & Sensible Architectural Bureau was an architectural company that specialized in house designs for moderate costs. The company printed a catalogue. Edward Schellentrager was a President and General Manager of the company. The main offices were in the Arcade, with branches in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Detroit. In 1891-2 architect Charles Preston worked for the company.

Biography

Theodore Schmitt was born in Cleveland. His German-born father had been a marshal and later superintendent of police from 1862 to 1892. This relationship probably helped secure commissions for the West Side Police Station, built in 1892, and the Central Police Station, built 1893. Theodore Schmitt was educated in the Cleveland public schools and later studied at Hannover and military school at Mannheim in Germany. He worked as an assistant in the office of George H. Smith from 1881 to 1884. He formed the partnership with Israel Lehman in 1885. He lived at 1841 East 82nd Street and had a country home, Eagle Cliff, on Lake Erie. He became active as a gas producer, selling his products to Standard Oil in the later years of his life. He continued working after Israel Lehman's death in 1914 until his own death in 1935.

Biography

Charles Sumner Schneider was born and educated in Cleveland at Outhwaite and Central High Schools. He was trained in architecture in the office of Granger and Meade, later Meade and Garfield, where he rose from chief draftsman to designer. He won several prizes awarded by the Cleveland Architectural Club. He studied under Gustav Umbenstock and Mr. Deglane at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Upon his return to Cleveland he formed a partnership with William S. Watterson, known as Watterson & Schneider. He later worked for the local office of George B. Post, as the superintendent of the Statler Hotel project. He then carried on an independent practice that specialized in residential architecture, designing several large estates for wealthy Ohioans. He was the architect of Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, the largest home built in Ohio. He was listed in the registered architect in the November 1940. He was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church. He was made a Fellow in the American Institute of Architects. His brothers Arthur and E.G. were well known artists, the former was appointed artist to the Sultan of Morocco.

Biography

Edwin J. Schneider was active as an architect in Cleveland from 1895 to 1947. He lived at 3122 Woodbine Avenue on the near west side of Cleveland. He is best known for buildings designed for the Diocese of Cleveland, including St. Ignatius Elementary School and Chapel (1903), Blessed Sacrament School (1904), St. Colman's Church (1914), and St. Catherine Church (1917).

Biography

Edward E. Schwabe was employed in the office of Walter Blythe. He was the supervising architect of the H. B. Payne Block, the White Elephant Concert Hall, and the Music Hall. After Blythe's death in 1884, he went into business for himself. Architects George Steffens and Paul Searles worked in his office. He died of tuberculosis at the age of thirty-two. He completed a will four days before his death. In it he left his French books on architecture and a typewriter to George Steffens. The rest of his estate went to his aunt Gertrude Haltnorth.

Biography

Charles Schweinfurth was Cleveland's preeminent architect of the 1880's and 1890's. He was born, attended public schools, and graduated from high school in Auburn, New York. He worked in architectural offices in New York City from 1872 to 1874 and at the office of the supervising architect of the U.S. Treasury in Washington, D.C. from 1874 to 1880. (Hubbell's obituary says that he came from Boston.) He moved to Cleveland to work on a house for Sylvester Everett, and remained throughout the rest of his life. From 1883 to 1886 he maintained an office with his brother Julius until Julius returned to practice in Boston. In Cleveland he was the architect of many of the Euclid Avenue mansions and was also noted for interior designs that included Old Stone Church and the Cuyahoga County Courthouse. In addition, he was the architect of several buildings for Western Reserve and Kenyon colleges. He was a founder and member of the Cleveland and Brooklyn Chapters of the American Institute of Architects, a fellow in the AIA, and a member of the Architect's League of New York. His architectural work was often featured in the pages of the "Inland Architect" and "American Architect and Building News". He had an honorary M.A. degree from Kenyon College and was a member of the Union Club. Initially his office was in the Blackstone Building however he moved to the New England Building upon its completion in 1896. He first resided on Cedar Avenue and then at 96 Arlington Street (now 2269 East 49th Street). He built a home that he designed in 1894 at 1951 East 75th Street. His brothers Julius and H. G. Schweinfurth owned a firm in Boston. Another brother, Albert, was active in Denver, and later, San Francisco. Charles Schweinfurth is buried in Auburn, New York.

Biography

Born in Auburn, NY, he began his career with Peabody and Stearns. In 1884 he became a partner with his brother, Charles, in Cleveland. The following year he opened an office in Boston where he designed several public buildings and school buildings in Boston, Cleveland, and Youngstown, as well as buildings on the campuses of Wellesley and the University of Illinois.He was married to Mary Frances Bellows in 1889 and was the father of one son, Charles. He died in1931 and is buried at Walnut Hills Cemetery, Walnut Hills, MA.

Biography

Levi Tucker Scofield (nee Schofield) was born in Cleveland and was raised in a home on Euclid Avenue near East 9th Street. His family later operated the Prospect Place Hotel on the site after which it became the location of the Schofield Building, which he designed. Levi Scofield attended Cleveland public schools, pursuing the study of architecture and engineering. At some point, he dropped the "H" from his name. In 1860 he moved to Cincinnati. He served in the Ohio 113th Infantry, rising in the rank to First Lieutenant and Captain. He wrote "The Retreat from Pulaski to Nashville, Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, November 30, 1864" which was published in 1909. After the war he returned to Cleveland. In 1867 he married Elizabeth C. Wright, who was prominent in local society and philanthropic circles. She was president of the YWCA, the Phyllis Wheatley Association, and organized the Cleveland Vocal Society. Levi Scofield is remembered as the architect of large Victorian era institutions that included the Asylum for the Insane in Athens and Columbus, Ohio, the North Carolina Penitentiary, the Ohio Penitentiary in Mansfield, and the Cleveland House of Corrections. His firm designed five Cleveland Public Schools between 1869 and 1883. He devoted seven and a half years, without compensation, to the Cuyahoga County Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and contributed over $57,000 of its total cost. He was the first Cleveland architect taken into membership in the American Institute of Architects and was a friend and golfing partner of John D. Rockefeller. Scofield was the sculptor of "These are my Jewels," a Civil War Monument installed at the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, later moved to the grounds of the Ohio State Capitol. The Schofield Office Building on the southwest corner of Euclid and East 9th Street, built in 1900, was built on the Schofield homestead and was originally owned by Levi Scofield. He had two sons, William Marshall Scofield (1868-1942) and Sherman Wright Scofield (1876-1942) who became members of his architectural firm. The Scofields were members of First Baptist Church and are buried in Lake View Cemetery.

Biography

Paul C. Searles was born in Wellington, Ohio, the son of a Methodist minister. His first job was with W.H. VanTine Realty Company. According to the 1890 census he was in real estate. His firm built the first modern apartment building in Cleveland at East 17th Street and Euclid Avenue. In 1908 he helped design and later re-built the ill-fated Lake View School in Collinwood after the famous fire. He was a Mason and a member of the Woodward Lodge. In 1918 he resigned from the architectural firm and helped organize the India Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, where he was secretary treasurer until his retirement in 1928. He died in Clearwater, Florida on May 16, 1947.

Biography

Harlen Shimmin was born in Cleveland, attending public schools and Business College. He began working as a mechanical engineer completing mechanical drawings. He later shifted to architecture. As early as 1892 he worked in the office of Charles W. Hopkinson and in 1904 went into business for himself. The largest part of his work was in residential design, examples of which are found in the Wade Park Allotment, Edgewater, Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and East Cleveland. He was a member of the Colonial Club, the Cleveland Athletic Club, a Mason of the Scottish Rite, and a member of the Al Koran Temple. Several of his designs were featured in the February 1913 Ohio Architect, Engineer, and Builder. He was listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect.

Biography

Albert Skeel was born in Bristol, England and immigrated to the United States in 1883. Early in his career he worked as a carpenter contractor. He worked as a draftsman for three years in architectural offices in Cleveland. He worked in the office of Frank S. Barnum from 1898 to 1902, working on plans for the Euclid Avenue Presbyterian Church. He lived in the Glen Valley area of Brecksville, where he designed many of the houses. Glen Valley was noted as an ideal country setting near the picturesque cliffs of Chippewa Creek. He was responsible for the complete restoration of Brecksville Congregational Church. He died in Brecksville in 1937 and is buried there.

Biography

Philip Small was born in Washington, D.C. He came to Cleveland in 1904 and attended Adelbert College of Western Reserve University from 1909 to 1912 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1915. He lived in Cleveland Heights and Hunting Valley. He was the Hunting Valley building commissioner and member of the board of zoning appeals. He served as a member of the Western Reserve University board of trustees and board of supervising architects. He was a member of the Union, Country, and Hermit Clubs and was a fellow in the American Institute of Architects. The firm of Small and Rowley specialized in traditional colonial and English revival architecture. He resided at 2898 Kingsley in Shaker Heights, with an office in the Terminal Tower. He was listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect. He lived at 1298 Westover Road in Cleveland Heights. He died at the Cleveland Clinic and is buried in Lake View Cemetery.

Albert Milton Smith was listed as an architect in Cleveland City Directories from 1878 until 1899, with offices first at 1220 Euclid and later at 1224 Euclid. He was born in Herkimer County, New York. In 1882 he was in a partnership with Anthony Myers. He lived at 36 Grasmere in East Cleveland and is buried in Lake View Cemetery.

Biography

Edward Smith was born in Cleveland and graduated from Central High School. He received training from architect Fenimore Bate for five years beginning in 1889. In 1894 he opened his own office. As an architect he was noted for his apartment buildings and terraces. At the end of his career he worked as a building inspector for the City Building Department. There was an article on Edward E. Smith in the March 1905 edition of the "Ohio Architect and Builder." He was an honorary member of the Cleveland Builders Exchange and the Cleveland Athletic Club.

Biography

George Horatio Smith was born in Pennsylvania and moved to Cleveland in 1879. He went into business with L. Allen Heard, son of Charles Heard. He went into business for himself when Heard left Cleveland in 1881. He was the architect of several Euclid Avenue mansions, including the residence of Charles F. Brush. His most significant work was in conjunction with John Eisenmann, the Old Arcade. The Colonial Arcade and Hotel, completed in 1898 followed it, and the Rose Building, the largest office building in Ohio, was completed in 1900. George H. Smith was a 32nd degree Mason and a past grand commander of the Knights Templar. He died of appoplexy on April 8, 1924 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania at the home of his friend, William J. Thomas. A son in Chicago and a daughter in Cleveland survived him. He was buried in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

Biography

Jacob Snyder, an Akron-based architect, was born in Columbia County, Pennsylvania. His father was a contractor and builder. He learned the trade while living at home. He went to Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where he took a general college course and theoretical course. After finishing coursework he went into business in Columbia County. He moved to Akron in 1853 where he began business as a grocer. Two years later he was engaged in the contracting business and building and architecture. In 1863 he formed a partnership in the lumber manufacturing business. He served on the Board of Education, as a trustee of Portage Township. Politically he was raised a Democrat, but switched political alliances during the Civil War becoming a Republican. He was also in favor of Prohibition. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Akron, where he was superintendent of Sunday School for several years. He made a specialty of church designs, and was the originator of the Akron Plan for churches, that included the church and radiating classrooms. He designed some buildings in Cleveland and outlying suburbs.

Biography

Adolphus Sprackling was a Captain in the Cleveland Grays. From 1893 to 1897 he was a partner in the firm of Matzinger and Sprackling and later went into business for himself. His office was at 5713 Euclid Avenue. He was murdered over an argument about how to cut salami in his apartment at 7619 Lexington Avenue.

Biography

Edgar A. Stanley was born in Ashtabula County, Ohio and graduated from the University of Illinois. He initially worked in Cleveland and resided on West 105th Street. While in Cleveland he worked for Albert Skeel and Frank Barnum. He moved to Youngstown in 1911, where he formed a partnership with Morris W. Scheibel, with whom he continued to practice until the mid-1920s. In 1930 he moved to Winter Park, Florida.

Biography

Rudolph Stanley-Brown was a grandson of President James A. Garfield. He was born in Mentor, Ohio, later moving with his parents to New York City. He first studied at Yale University and later studied architecture at Columbia University. He moved to Cleveland in 1920 and began to work with his uncle, Abram Garfield. He was a partner in the firm of Garfield, Stanley-Brown, Harris & Robinson from 1930-1934. He moved to Washington, D.C in 1936.

Biography

Otto K. Stapf was born in Pittsburgh. He was active as a Cleveland architect from 1905 to 1917. He designed residential and commercial buildings. A number of his houses were built in Lakewood. An article on his works appeared in the June 1912 edition of the "Ohio Architect, Engineer and Builder." The article noted that he was one of the pioneers in the use of reinforced concrete. It also featured several photographs of houses that he designed in Craftsman and Colonial Revival styles. In 1910 he lived at 1931 Northland in Lakewood and in 1920 at 1663 Northland in Lakewood. He moved to St. Petersburg, Florida in 1924 where he died in 1962.

Biography

John F. Steffens was a native Clevelander. He went to Columbia University where he received a degree in Architecture. He was an assistant in the firm of Graham, Anderson, Probst & White. He returned to Cleveland where he was a member of the firm of Steffens & Steffens with his brother George between 1912 and 1914 and between 1915 and 1923. He was the Treasurer of the John H. Newson Company from 1915 until 1917. From 1932 until 1939 he was a member of the firm of Steffens & Fox, which he founded.

Biography

Steffens, Searles & Hirsh was active in Cleveland in the late 19th century and early 20th century. They became known for their many middle class apartment buildings, several of which are still standing. They designed the Clinton Apartments on Clinton Avenue and the Heyse Apartment Building on Franklin Circle.

Biography

George W. Stickle's firm was founded in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1916. He was a member of the firm of Fuller and Stickle from 1923 until 1928. He moved to Cleveland in 1945. He was awarded citations for church architecture in 1962, 1963, and 1964. In 1964 his firm employed over sixty employees and won an award from the Chamber of Commerce from the City of New York - Borough of Queens. His main interest was in ecclesiastical architecture. He moved to St. Augustine, Florida later in life where he died in 1966.

This was an architectural firm that included Ray Stickle, John Sherwood Kelly and Robert Stickle. The firm's office was located at 2422 Prospect Avenue. The firm designed several Roman Catholic churches, including St. William's in Euclid, Our Lady of Mercy in Tremont, and the remodeling of St. John's Cathedral.

Biography

Frederic William Striebinger was born in Cleveland and educated at Columbia University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. An artist, he was a member of the Cleveland Art Club and Watercolor Society. He was President of the Cleveland Architectural Club and a member of the Cleveland chapter of the American Institute of Architects. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, the Knights Templar, and a number of clubs in Cleveland. He was the architect of several local hospitals, Masonic temples, and Christian Science churches. He died in his home at 2049 East 96th Street after an illness of several months. For several years his office was in the 1900 Euclid Building. He was listed as a registered architect in the November 1940 Ohio Architect.

Herman F. Stuhr was a German-born lumber dealer who was also the architect of several buildings. In 1906 he had an office in the Rose Building, while his sons ran the Bohm-Stuhr Lumber Company at 6325 Broadway. He lived at 5911 Detroit Avenue.

Herbert Swigart grew up in Richfield Township. He was active as either a draftsman or architect for several years. He lived at 1289 Holmden Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood, moving to 18210 Olympia Road in the Euclid-Green neighborhood of Cleveland by 1920.He retired to Dayton, Ohio where he died in 1947.
